Lʼ homme est le plus profond des animaux, Car il a la peau.
Paul Valéry
Naoki Kawanoʼs artist concept, “SKINCONCEPT,” focuses on the exploration of surface and texture and their impact on human perception. By challenging the unconscious processing of surface information in the brain, he aims to offer new perspectives. This interdisciplinary research includes phenomenology, which explores the structure of experience and consciousness; physics, which examines material properties and their interaction with light and touch; and anthropology, which investigates the cultural and symbolic use of materials.
Through various media such as aluminum foil, coffee grounds, candle wax, paper etc, Kawano creates works that provide novel perceptual experiences.
Kawanoʼ s “SKINCONCEPT” is a profound inquiry into the influence of surface characteristics on perception, continually offering new sensory experiences through his diverse use of materials and interdisciplinary approach. His works play a significant role in the contemporary art scene.
